King Supplies its First Canopies at C-Store Sites Scored for LEED Certification November 9th, 2009: King Manufacturing supplied its first canopies at new convenience store sites being scored for LEED certification throughout the 2009 construction season. A total of 17 canopies at 13 convenience store sites in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa were slightly altered from normal construction to help the owner of the sites meet their goal. King worked with its suppliers and the convenience store chain's architect to ensure that all products facing the sun met specific solar reflective indexes (SRI). The interior white wash side of King's sheet metal (both for white and black decking, as well as backflashing) already met the requested SRI thresholds for typical canopies, and at two sites a particular shade of green was requested on the canopies with unique exposed-deck roof systems.
One modification was the use of a new white primer to cover all surfaces of structural steel facing the sun, rather than the dark red oxide primer typically used. Several white primers were evaluated before choosing the best overall match for this purpose. King provided documentation regarding the SRI values of all paint finishes and the percentage of recycled content in the structural steel for the customer's use in the LEED certification process.
With only slight modifications and some extra documentation, the following new sites met the requirements for King's customer:
- Waukesha, WI - La Crosse, WI - North Mankato, MN - Belle Plaine, MN - Manchester, IA - Chanhassen, MN - Howard, WI - Red Wing, MN - Elkhorn, WI - Charles City, IA - Eau Claire, WI - Fox Lake, WI - Dakota, MN
King's contribution to the LEED certification was a learning experience, and now with the familiarity of the process, it can be repeated efficiently. King Manufacturing looks forward to 2010, where canopies for more new convenience store sites being scored for LEED certification are planned for the same chain, and hopefully more to follow in the retail petroleum and other commercial industries.
